I joined a free dating site but when I log on I get a page opening which says I need to download a iOS update to get VPN and be able to read the dating site pages.
I just deleted the lot as I tend to steer clear of anything online which doesn’t fill me with confidence but I’m curious as to what VPN is or does and did I do right to delete.

I don't pretend to know all the ins and outs of things like these, and learning about the 'latest' stuff often makes my head hurt, but there are probably the same type of rules you should follow, as with other things that you download. eg don't do it from a dodgy site, or spam email or anything like that etc etc.

There are some good ones around, and gives quite a bit of info.

I think you have to pay for some, but it may be what you need to make it all feel safer. It stands for virtual private network, although you maybe knew that anyway, but it is amazing how much this google thingy knows about it all.

I Googled it and its seems to be a sort of video thing. It does look like a pay job too. Be careful Raach.

A VPN is a Virtual Private Network.
Using one means that once set up you've effectively extended your private network (like you'd have at home) and enables you to send and receive data across a public or shared network that you might be using away from home as if you were actually connected to the private network.
This means that information is encrypted, and is more difficult for hackers to intercept, like they could for example if you're sitting in an internet cafe, shopping centre etc. using your mobile, tablet, laptop.

Or they might be using initials for something bad that are usually associated with something good.

Although VPN is usually as OnlineMSE posted, what they are offering could be something completely different starting with those letters, or the letters standing for nothing at all.

Try to get software from a website that you think is trustworthy. And of course keep your antivirus software up-to-date.

Thank you all for the information. I did google the letters but was none the wiser about what it meant. Anyhow it doesn't sound like anything I would need or want so I'm happy not to bother.

Raach, I asked a friend who told me it is a virtual private network, that some dating agencies use so that you can send videos to each other in strict privacy, introducing yourselves , and usually a pay thing too. A lot of 'naughty' stuff goes on with it esp' paid for' porn etc... lol
He wouldnt say how he knew ...LOL. just said it could be compared to video conferencing...

Now ya know ... V x

i have vpn.

to me it means i can browse "anonymously" and access a lot of paid for sites.

my understanding is that your browsing goes through a number of servers around the world, losing the "tracking trail".

They’ll still find you fosy.

Any website that asks you to install something be careful about.

NEVER EVER follow their links, that is a really bad idea.

Do as RAACH did and Google it.

Sometimes you will see it is something normal like RealPlayer for playing most videos, and you go to their website and get it from there. There are to many add-ons too list and most people only ever need about a dozen or less.

You don't follow their links because they may not be correct or even lead you somewhere you do not want to be, like a site that will install bad/illegal/virus software.

As for privacy, a VPN is a start but still tracable, look up TOR or The Onion Router.

Don't save user names or passwords automatically, go old school, pen and paper.

True, reliable, VPN costs money as a service a customer pays for on a monthly basis. Meaning; if someone wishes to appear as "invisible" on any network ... well ... they will have to pay actual money for the privilege.

There are Chrome based browsers like EPIC BROWSER that won't save or broadcast your internet browsing history and, perhaps, for folk seeking porn, Epic Browser ensures browser searches are not recorded BUT to gain proper immunity from having your internet browsing being revealed, only a paid VPN service might guarantee such a service.

Though, in the world we live in, perhaps I shouldn't use the word "guaranteed".

Truth is, Raach ...

EVERY query, search or enquiry you have ever made online ... is available ... to somebody like me. :-)

If I wanted to, I could list EVERY thing you have ever done online ... and share EVERY search inquiry or interest.

The very act of you using the internet makes any or every one of your thoughts ... public knowledge. :-)

RAACH84  Female  Buckinghamshire 30-Dec-2018 07:30 Message #4732250
You are sounding a bit pervy Beach. HorOrWot I’d never heard of an orchidometer and that made me laugh at your comment.
