Pickled Gherkins

I treated myself to a jar of Mrs Elwood's pickled gherkins to ease the strain of lockdown and was astonished to read on the jar "refrigerate after opening and use within 5 days".
Five days?!?!? A whole jar of pickled gherkins in five days, they are pickled for God's sake!
It's health and safety gone mad!...

Yep, but they're covered then, and you eat them at your own risk.
A bit like a pack of roasted salted peanuts that I treated myself to.
Contents - Peanuts, sunflower oil, salt.
Allergy advice - Check contents listed in bold (which was peanuts!).
(may also contain nuts, milk, gluten sources, mustard, soya & sulphites).

Surely anything that is pickled and or contains vinegar doesn't need to be fridged , neither does jam/marmalade as the mould that forms on some is only fermented sugars

Well this is turning out to be nearly as interesting as my crisps thread - I just checked a jar of Tesco's own brand pickled gherkins that I bought at the weekend because they'd sold out of Mrs Elwood's and they give you 4 weeks to consume them.
But Aldi's "Bramwells" brand give you 3 weeks. How strange and how fascinating...

Gherkins should keep for a year or so after being opened as long as the are stored correctly. They might deteriorate in quality though.

Well that's not what Mrs Elswood says, why would they stipulate less than a week?
I had to check it twice with my other glasses on because I thought I'd misread it....

I've had a jar of Lidl cornichons in the fridge for a year and they're still alright, you shouldn't need to store pickles in the fridge or eat them with in a few days, as long as the contents are still submerged they should last for years. I wouldn't use mouldy jam though, that really can grow some odd stuff.

It does seem odd given the reason stuff is pickled in the first place.
I always keep jam, ketchup, pickles and stuff in the fridge though...

I've had things 'happen' to pickles and ketchup that makes me chuck them away.......

A common one for ketchup is where it goes black around the bottle top.....I always chuck it.....as I read that the 'black' contains lots of dodgy bacteria....

I've also had beetroot go 'a funny colour'....funnier than it normally is......Stranger....weirder.....I haven't hung about to find out if it's ok to eat......It's bye bye beetroot.........although, for all I know, it could have turned into the cure for the COVID thing.....

This is not really anything to do with gherkins but look to the south west at around 10.03pm and you should see the ISS flying over...

I often wonder whether there are any pickled onions and gherkins orbiting up there like the space station does.....

Well that's not what Mrs Elswood says

Maybe she's the one who is pickled.
