I thought he did quite well, his questions were preciseand his follow up questions showed he'd listened to the answers given and where his first questions wasn't answered properly. It was good to see less showyness and more precision and he made Raab look a bit stupid, which admitedly isn't hard. I think when Boris is back the exchanges he will have with Starmer will be interesting, one full of bluster and one with a calm and forensic manner, I think this will be what a proper opposition looks like.

I hope Starmer does well and he should be a match for Johnson in PMQs.

Politicians come in all types. Some look good aesthetically. Some are showman, some are brilliant public speakers and some almost stutter in their responses.

None of this makes them a good politician but it is what can make or break a politician who has to be seen speaking to the public. Once again the media and perception rule the day.

He couldn't have had an easier debut given the place was empty, I would imagine when the house is full of 650 hollering MP's it can be quite intimidating.
He is much better than Corbyn though, he doesn't come across as a shouty agitator at some protest rally.
It's about time we had a decent opposition, the govt will need to up it's game.

As an aside it was hilarious hearing the Welsh Health secretary use the "F" word during their first remote sitting, he forgot his mic was on..... lol

It was good to see a discussion, without a snarling Corbyn.
I think the government will have a lot more problems with Starmer.

It was Corbyn who advocated a kinder politics, he only defended himself from the snarlers....eventually.

Don't you remember the spite in May's eyes? It was tangible.
Like the hate in the eyes of Margaret Hodge.
Corbyn was too mild in the eyes of many and didn't snarl enough.

Corbyn had a typical 1950s furtive and underhanded snarl but even without that he could hardly be described as mild. Again, those furtive years after being elected leader could do nothing to hide his allegiance to terrorists and an anti-British stance on any conflicts. His treatment of the Jewish community was not mild!

I'm not sure why anyone is talking about Corbyn now. Starmer is now the leader of the Labour party and will hopefully build it up to be an opposition party.

Actually Lyn, as you still seem to be Corbyn's official spokesperson can you tell us what he was doing in the commons on Wednesday, given the fact he is over 70 and should be isolating at home?
He's been spotted several times out and about and not social distancing - the arrogance of the bloke is never ending...

If they can let a 75 year old GP work on the front line in the NHS then as person passionate about helping his constituents, vegetarian and cyclist MP can go to parliament and sit 2m away from anyone.

After reading Nosaint and Heirophants desperation to defend the indefensible, made me think about Tory propaganda drones.

One of the most infuriating things about the Boris Bots and Tory propaganda drones is their belligerent political illiteracy, to the extent that they make the most lurid accusations of "treason" and "hating Britain" against left-wing political figures and the left in general.

Whatever pejorative nonsense that partisan corporate media hacks might pretend that socialism is ("despising rich people", "spending other people's money", "having some kind of irrational hatred of all forms of business or trade") the reality is simple.

Socialists believe in public ownership of essential infrastructure and services.

* You think the NHS should be run as a not-for-profit public service prioritising health care on the basis of need, rather than ability to pay upfront for it?*

* You think police services should be run as non-profit public services with the primary objective of combating crime, rather than as private enterprises with the primary motive of generating a profit for corporate profiteers?*

* You think the roads in your neighbourhood should be free for the public to access, rather than privately owned toll roads with the objective of making unearned profits for the private owners?*

* You think court judges should be impartial and paid by the state, rather than employees of private profit-seeking corporations?*

Well sorry. If you believe any of this, you're actually a bit of a socialist, because you support the concept that some things are simply too important to be used for private capitalist profiteering.

If you hate socialism, it obviously follows that you hate the NHS, you hate the criminal justice system, and you hate the roads, because you would prefer them all to be run by corporate interests with the primary objective of extracting private profits.

Some of the other stuff that socialists traditionally want to see run as not-for-profit public services are public transport, the water supply, the mail system, and the national grid.

In most developed nations these things are wholly, or mainly run as public services, but in Britain, as a result of our radically right-wing privatisation agenda over the last four decades, these services are operated by a mix of profiteering private corporations (often based in tax havens), and (quite incredibly) the governments of other countries, including communist China!

74% of UK rail franchises are operated by the state rail companies of other countries. Numerous foreign states have investments in privatised UK water companies including China's whopping slice of Thames Water. In 2016 China and Qatar teamed up to buy a massive chunk of the UK's national grid, meaning they've got a stake every time we turn a light on.

It turns out that Tories only hate the concept of public ownership if the public that owns our infrastructure is British. When it's a foreign government coming in to buy up stakes in British public services as cash cow investments, to siphon off funds to improve their own public services for their people back home, Tories are absolutely fine with it, and they're literally dedicated to keeping things this way!

If you vote Tory, you want things to stay like this, with our vital public services and infrastructure used as cash cow investments by a mix of profiteering corporations, tax-dodgers, and foreign governments.

Socialists believe that vital public services and infrastructure should be run on a not-for-profit basis, for the benefit of the British people, and in the long-term strategic interests of the UK economy.

Yet, with an almost infinite level of gullibility, the Tory propaganda drones repeat the ludicrous assertion that socialists "hate Britain", and the 'good old Tories' are the patriots who love it and defend it!

The public are continually fed this ludicrous counter-factual gibberish by a bunch of propaganda

hacks with vested financial interests in keeping ownership of our infrastructure and public services a shambolic profiteering free-for-all, then the gullible amongst us mindlessly regurgitate this rote-learned corporate media nonsense onto every political social media thread they can find. And there are absolute plagues of people like this.

They're so ridiculously credulous that they can look at two competing ideologies, one of which says that certain aspects of the economy are so important that they need to be run in the national interest, and another saying that every aspect of the economy needs to have the primary objective of generating profits for private corporations, tax-dodgers, and foreign governments ... and conclude that the "profit before national interest" people are the patriots, and the "national interest before profit" people are the dangerously radical leftist "traitors" who "hate Britain"!

It's difficult to know what to do in the face of such belligerently unthinking ignorance.

How is it even possible to reach out to people who wilfully allow themselves to believe the most blatantly reality-reversed propaganda, just because it's what they're told to believe by those with obvious vested financial interests in opposing public ownership of infrastructure and services, because it would interfere with their unearned profit extraction?

.Maglorian, AvitoDauphine, Wandering4Fun, Witheflow, withgoodintent, to use just a few of your names, you cannot escape your neo liberal cabal by pretending to have socialist ideals and pretending to care about others and pretending to want to help the poor. You really nasty piece of work.
You mock council house tenants? You laugh at littered communities? You make racist comments? You make snide homophobic remarks? You hate seeing the poor being helped and attack every thread where caring people try to help others. The use of fake images, verbal insults to “non-agreers”, multi profiles including a female one with access to the “ladies” room.
The only contribution you have made to the forum is reviving all the excellent votes which float around whenever one of the abhorrent trolls makes an unwelcome appearance.

Someone just asked me where that dickhead Maglorian and his imaginary cabal had disappeared to and ..... voila!

"It's very obvious that the Tories were frightened of Corbyn and perhaps they still are."

After he delivered two election victories to them on a plate, I doubt that somehow.
Although I agree that all opponents of Corbyn should be frightened because he and his followers have regularly demonstrated what nasty people they are under the "caring" facade.
Have you read some of the bile they spout on these threads? Warm and cuddly it ain't....

Maglorian,

A very good post of excellent points.

I wonder if No Saint can give examples of Corbyn treating the Jewish community with contempt because from what evidence I saw he was friends with many in the Jewish community and they voted for him.

Here is one example that slipped through the net in favour of the viscous attacks from certain Jewish Leaders.
https://www.emanchannel.tv/corbyn-was-champion-of-jewish-community/
I've seen many others during the onslaught of him.

I sometimes wonder if some people don't Kow tow to certain ways of doing things they don't understand (and Corbyn was/is innovative in what he sees as an opportunity to communicate), they assume it is against them, such as trying to communicate with some terrorist leaders, especially in supporting Palestinian people out on a limb.
