We laughed today at some sayings but noted how many involved socks.

Put a sock in it.

Pull your socks up.

Sock somebody.

Bless your cotton socks.

Blow your socks off.

I wondered how many more there were and there origins. It made a pleasant change from talking about the virus.

Bless your cotton socks was an interesting one and I found a number of suspected origins. This was one of them.

“It does not come from the cotton material, but from George Edward Lynch Cotton.

In 1858, as Bishop of Calcutta, Mr Cotton established schools for Eurasian children. As part of his philanthropy, he ordered dozens of pairs of socks to be sent over for the children, to help against the cold, blessing all the socks on arrival.”

I was in a museum recently looking at the first musical instruments. One of the early gramophones with the big brass trumpet had a rolled up sock which adjusted the volume depending how far it was pushed into the trumpet.
Putting a sock in it.

I have heard that hapless socks who have lost their partners have been seconded into an alternative use as an emergency replacement when the TP runs out.
