I once read somewhere that the original 'series' were sponsored by the manufacturers of soap products and the name stuck.

I heard the same Blue-Poppy. It might have been way back when they were broadcast on the radio. My understanding of a soap opera is the following of ordinary people, leading lives, ordinary things but with a few interesting or amusing twists and turns. A bomb or a murder would be the exception but the soap operas of today are fairy tales, over-the-top adventure stories, so not soap operas at all.

You’re right. So-called soap operas are no longer soaps.

Do they make new soap operas or are we enjoying, or not, the end of those which have been going for years.

Likey because nothing in it, will actually wash. But unlike a bar of soap that you actually get to the end of, a soap opera seems to last forever. Maybe was sponsored by soap companies such as 'Pears' though in the beginning. I don't watch any, as I like a beginning, a middle and a happy ending and not something that drags on forever and ever. I mean Coranation Street was around when I was a child but I doubt that it bares any resemblence to early episodes now. But who wants to spend their life watching soap?
