My Mum used to say that about keeping your hand on your hapenny. I didn't realise that it was a national expression,I thought my Mum used only the Yorkshire vernacular!

My mum came from Warwickshire.
Maybe that's a suburb of Yorkshire.

My Nan used to say; never date a Catholic or a man with brown eyes, neither are to be trusted. Hmmm a brown eyed catholic boy took my virginity against my will. Gawd, she must be turning in her grave!

We could have a section about why you shouldn't rely on the advice written in Dating Guide Handbooks! - especially the simplistic, stereotypical tosh and pseudo-psychology that most of them contain.

I've read bits of several, Phil - and thrown 'em in the bin, Bridget Jones style. :-)

More of a life tip than just dating advice though, it's good for that too

Listen more than you speak
If you just speak you are only repeating what you already know,
If you listen more then you might actually learn something new.

Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus Quotes (showing 1-30 of 42)
“When a man can listen to a woman's feelings without getting angry and frustrated, he gives her a wonderful gift.
He makes it safe for her to express herself.
The more she is able to express herself, the more she feels heard and understood, and the more she is able to give a man the loving trust, acceptance, appreciation, admiration, approval, and encouragement that he needs.”

"You don't get much for 99 1/2 pence."

Don't you mean 19/11 1/2?

My mum never gave me any dating advice, my dad always said kissing and cuddling were ok but nothing else.

I see a bit of a theme here, all our dating advice was on not having sex, nothing about actually meeting anyone or being in a relationship.

Never go on a date with a man whose first words to you were ... "I like slow, sexy love making and I expect you to have sex with me on the second date at the latest" ... means he ain't interested in you as a person ... only in getting his leg over.

If he says the same to your friend, he definitely isn't interested in anything but sex ...and if you think you are "different" for him, you need your head read.

(This was in my handbook that I opened for a girlfriend on Friday, but she either can't read or is desperate for any man whatever his motive, because she seems to think she is "special" for him!!! Yeah, you and how many more gullible women? I despair!)
