What are your views, as many of the traditions, and connections , are quite old, so can it have modern applications and benefits to Society or oneself in ones life

I find it does give one a strength and a tenacity to go on in trying times...

We are in trying times now in many ways in Society today Worldwide.. so the need for practical Religion and Spirituality may have a really positive effect now

My opinion is it is all self-deluding nonsense, and is the favourite tool of the exploiters and deceivers.
Religion began on the day the first charlatan met the first fool. It is time mankind shrugged it off completely but I don't think it will happen as most people are too gullible or dim to see it for the total farce that it is.

I guess some see Football as a new Religion... and Science...

Darcyman  Male  3-Feb-2012 10:47 Reply »
I think you could be right about football but not science. Science is the opposite of religion it is all about facts not fantasy and of course religion has fought tooth and nail against science for hundreds of years.

Often, people who call themselves 'spiritual' are really the opposite. You only have to explore the internet to find 'spiritual' people who want to kill fellow creatures and who don't support their fellow humans.

In your opinion Celt alone lol... but your entitled to them be that rightly or wrongly

"Take the log out of ones own eye first "Jesus said .. ".him without sin cast the first stone " also he quoted

These are good wisdom teaching statements but maybe hard to apply in 21 st Century complex living , we

may think of them as old hat IMHO

The best thing about religion in the 21st century (In Britain) is that we can say out loud that it is a load of tosh without being dragged to the centre of town, tied to stake and burned alive, so I take heart we are making progress.

I see that this old 'hot' potato has be resurrected 'yet' again.
Again, I reckon that their should be a religion only room where all the religionists can talk amongst themselves and compete as to who has the best sky daddy.
It seems to me that in order for some people to justify their faith, they need to endure the the quest of the atheists in order to earn their gold star faith badge.

Stick around long enough, and I'm sure someone will attempt to compete for their Platinum badge, so far, I think trucker is ahead by a nose, but SM is catching up quickly.

Wake me up when its all over and tell me who's won

We all need something to believe in a religeon does provide this when there's no stronger/paternal influence around. We all loose our way on occasions and some need answers to questions we cannot answer. religeon provides this.

But then is there a difference between religeon and ideology. I notice how oftern polical ideology is expressed in the same way as extreemist religeon. In my view they both provide the same service (pun intended).

I think it is as practical as anyone wants to believe it to be.

Why should folks differing viewpoints and opinions be scorned at.. as surely that is snot a Just thing [ that being meant as Just , as in fair ] in a debate on Religion and Spirituality in the 21 st Century.. and that being anyway as it is , the fact that .Religion and Spirituality may be deemed [ b y some ]as two entirely different aspects /subjects of Altruism and the Higher Mind Thoughts... and such like ?

In the 21st century in fact, there is nothing more practical than being able to eliminate all forms of prejudice and superstition.

To a great extent science has accomplished this but it still needs the answers to our ultimate questions, such as, why are we here? What is the purpose of creation? Does mankind continue into an afterlife, and will we meet those passed on before us?

Also very topical at the moment - corruption is rife and honesty and truth seem hard to see?

scooble  Female  3-Feb-2012 15:59 Reply »
perhaps there was no purpose, perhaps it just happened like things happen all the time, like dropping keys or tripping on a paving stone.
Perhaps that just the way it is - scary isn't it?

The why are we here question is not only sharred by some scientist but tonight accross the UK many will be wondering not only why am I here but how the f**k did I get here/in this mess. etc..

A crude example of the human desire for knowladge.

I'm not for 30 secs going to diss a belief in a superior being because something must have happened at some stage but spirituality can often be missused by those who have their own agenda. One religeon is not neccesarily the one that is right...

I think if there was more sharing than fighting in Religious beliefs and Spirituality we would learn a whole lot more
Much is lost in the fighting , amongst ourselves re beliefs /faith /s imo

Because if people believe in a superiour being they will believe in those who pretend to be an incarnation of that being on earth.

Once you have the belief of the people you have control of the people. This is why religeon has resulted in so many wars. Someone realised that if we pretend that those people over there in that land (that I want) believe that their religeon is the one true only one and ours doesn't exist, they are heritics etc. and thus we must kill them (and nick their land)...

Yes i agree and in a way TC that is just Predatory pretying on what anopther Man has .. thats why sharing beliefs and faiths...makes a whole lot of difference...

Maybe in the uk we have done this to some extent already by sharing our different heritages/beliefs and cultures,., living fairly peaceably, aside different belief systems that different nationalities and Spiritual traditions hold and we even share one anothers celebrations like Christmas and Diwali / Chinese New Year and Jewish Traditions/ Buddhist etc etc
Male
Tainted_Chihuahua  Male  3-Feb-2012 17:40 Reply »
Christmas itself was never really celebrated untill Victorian times apparantly, (I could be wrong). Most of it is Pagan anyway.

I do however believe in God and Christ, and I do believe in Karma which is a clash I know but then the bible did say God helps those who helps themselves, as in what goes around comes around.

Lol but then of course the bible did take a fair few ideas off other more established religeons...

sorry typos top line should read " Predatory preying on what another Man has "

PS ;being Predatory as i see it ,of what another Man has in spoils , is an oh so very basic instinctual thing

..tribal , an inherent type way to behave .. almost outdated and somewhat primitive imo
