Passport's

My passport expires 20th August this year. John and I have been thinking about getting away soon somewhere warm for a holiday. One travel agent said I shouldn't consider using it after February...another said if its Europe as long as I am back before it expires it will be ok.

I am changing my name this year but as yet we haven't fixed a date. (Property has to be sold first) What I dont wish to do is pay twice for a new passport. This is what would happen if you have a name change on a new passport. I doubt if I could use my new married name until we are actually wed?

Just wondered if any of you folks have came across this situation?

Thank you, H x

You could put the wedding off for 10 years :)

I know some countries won't let you in unless you have a minimum of 6 months on your passport. Once you've decided where you want to go and when, you could give their embassy in London a ring and ask for their advice.

On the other hand you could still use a passport in your current name as long as you remember to book any flights/holidays in the same name as your passport.

My understanding of the law is , you can use any name you want as long as you aren't using it to deceive or defraud. Call the passport office and ask for their advice.

You could also change your name by deed poll. Its a fairly simple process but probably as expensive as changing your name on your passport once it's been renewed..

My daughter has always travelled with her maiden name on her passport, you dont have to change your name when you get married,

You can also travel to europe until the date on your passport runs out. Some countries like you to have 6 weeks after your return date left on it, but its rare.

You can renew it up to 9 months ahead and the unexpired element gets added on to the expiry of the new one.
but if you do decide to renew they advise that you shouldn't then book a holiday until you have actually received the new one. This should take 3 weeks (2 weeks if you take the rather expensive post office checking option) but they can't guarantee it.
As far as expry dates there are many countries outside the EU where you need a minimum of 6 months remaining on your passport beyond your return date. In theory, if travelling within the EU, you should be able to travel up to the expiry date, but I have read of some countries not liking it if there's less than 3 months left on it even thoug you have return travel arrangements.

the direct gov website will tell you all you need to know about passports. I think they say that you have to have 6 months left on it to renew it. Also renewing it int he winter months you will get it back quicker, as there is always a backlog into the spring and summer months as folks often leave it until the last minute and then they wonder why they can't enter another country outside europe.

I assume you want to use your married name on new passport ! You dont have to, so you could get a new one now and just keep your current name. Assuming you plan to get a new passport after marriage. You should be ok within the EU as long as it has not expired, but don't go outside the EU.

Congratulations on your new life to be! You are OK using your maiden name in most countries today except it could present a problem in more conservative countries.

A colleague of mine, when we both worked for an airline, went on honeymoon using her maiden name passport and she and her new husband were forced to book two rooms as they were not considered a married couple by the reception staff. I'm talking of quite a few years ago but better be safe than sorry.

Of course, it might also have been a way of selling more rooms on the part of the enterprising hotel staff but it was terribly irritating to the newly-weds. They were in a Muslim country and the hotel chain was either Sheraton or Hilton, can't quite remember.

Terribly hypocritical of course. Attitudes may have changed and it as a while ago. As for validity, it's always better to have a few months left on the passport just to pre-empt any over-officious "jobs worth" person who may try to cause trouble.

Whatever else, make sure that your name matches the airline ticket. That, too, can cause a problem. I know, it happened to me! Good luck!

I consider the Post Office fee for checking it to be a bit of a rip off.

I can't remember exactly now but I'm pretty sure I applied for my first 10 year passport in my married name before my wedding and it came through valid for travel for our honeymoon, but that was a long time ago now!

very similiar to how you applied for your passport the first time.

collect form from post office, complete it and send it to the required passport office - it will tell you in the form which one.

Its surprising how many peopel can actually countersign. you say you have a doc at work. Do you have a nurse there? s/he can sign for you. As could a teacher if you have kids at school and a teacher who knows you

cg...think the nurse might have to be a registered nurse but doesn't have to be a sister.

If the photo on your passport looks like the photo on here...I'll sign it :) x

Practising qualified nurses should be registered with the NMC, you can check this online.

Health care support workers/auxiliary nurses aren't on the NMC register.
