Formally put into administration today. It's all on the 'net, 1,000 jobs at risk.
Now an apology to anyone I have upset/annoyed lately. The job situation has been playing on my mind more than I realised - it's not knowing the future that pains. I had one message (not here) from a good friend who said I could call anytime if I needed someone to talk to. Being a loner, not many people I choose to tell my troubles to. I appreciate that and want to say a massive "Thanks" to said individual.
OK now the really boring bit - why is an oil company in trouble - they make loads of profit?
Well, the majors do - Esso, bp, Shell. Why? Because they extract and sell crude oil. That's where the money is. There is no profit in retail, refining and little in wholesale at the moment.. Look at any service station, there'll be a Costa Coffee, Tesco Metro or similar. Ruther, Coryton is geared up tp gasoline (petrol) production but now, Diesel is King and Coryton can't make it fast enough so it imports from Europe. See - told you it was dull!

And diesel prices will soar because of this closure.

For a long time now, the transport firms of this country that travel abroad get most of their diesel over the channel where it has always been cheaper, anyone who bought a diesel car for economy will be scratching their heads soon, I can remember when unleaded was the same price as diesel, ... glad I stuck to a petrol car now.

Looks like we 'might' be facing petrol shortages as deliveries of raw crude + refined oil have been suspended to the Swiss company Petroplus who run the Refinery, which in turn supplies 20% of the overall demand to London & the South East. As we speak there are a couple of tankers at anchor in the Estuary on the shipping AIS (sorry anorak moment :o/ )
Other sites run by Petroplus in Teesside & Swansea have also gone into administration. Of course it's sod-all to do with the condemns, but a sign of the times? I feel sorry for the many who 'may' loose their jobs through no fault of their own, my neighbour is an electrican there.

Teesside is a terminal only - Swansea is a bitumen (tar) plant.

Asda South Woodham Ferrers ran out of diesel just after I filled my van this evening.

speedy,
cant you remember when diesel was a lot cheaper than petrol?
used in the main for commercial vehicles, and known as a dirty fuel?
obviously as diesel has become more popular they have hiked up the price.
i heard last week that to make a diesel car worth it you have to do at least 30,000mls/yr, and there was another proviso, but i cant recall what that was now.

"And diesel prices will soar because of this closure. "
It didn't take 'em long!
Diesel at my local Shell petrol station was 138.9p yesterday, it is now 140.9p.

Diesel is up to 7% biofuel anyway.
