Olympics

for the people, or ...

...just for the business people like Seb Coe and his lot to make money?
My road has always been bumpy and uneven here and there, with a few small pot holes scattered about too.
The council fixed the big holes that appeared with the last big freeze, but that was all.
Now the Olympics (or Seb's business) will be using the road and the surrounding area for the cycle races.
Suddenly, uneven parts of the road and minor holes have been fixed.
When we locals wanted something done about said road, nothing! Now business has 'moved in' so to speak, it gets done pronto!
Typical business before people huh?

A nice new road! Wales has been promised a second-hand badminton net and a pair of Tani Grey Thompson's socks.

Could have been worse Fonz, yer local swimming baths could have been nominated to hold the synchronised swimming, then the roads would still be in a shit-state.

I had a look at the London Olympics 2012 souvenirs at John Lewis in Oxford Street today.

As the old granny in the Catherine Tate show used to say What a load of old shit!

Amongst other delights, there are three different types of tea cosy and no, none of them are hats.

That is a very blinkered and short sighted view of what the Olmpics means as far as putting UK plc on show to the whole world.
The fact that a high profile person like Lord Coe (who in his day was one of the worlds best athletes in his field) has taken on the mantle to be the driving force behind this sort of project is instrumental in it being completed the way it has. Clearly he is a driven man and together with his team has ensured that at least we are ready to host the games.

For sure the Olympics project has had a huge budget (not all public money), but that is peanuts in the scale of things when you consider the cost of promoting yourself on the world stage. Not so many years ago when I was in the States they still portray London as having "pea-souper" fogs and men walking around in bowler hats carrying their briefcases and umbrellas. Just look at Coca-Cola's annual advertising budget, then scale that up to advertise a whole nation. Yes the games are in London but there are going to be atheletes, dignataries. officials, and visitors across the whole of the UK.

So you got your road fixed out of it. It was never likely to have been done by your local authority because of a lack of money but has nothing to do with big business moving in. If you want to sell your house you tart the place up to look good. We are about to go on the big stage and if we fcuk it up we will have lost the chance of the century for the next century.

If they are holding road races, expect to have your road closed for several hours, at a time then. You will be prisoner in your own home.
Hadn't thought of that?

The Olympics lost it's appeal for me when professionals were allowed into the games.

Before long it'll only be China who'll be able to afford the cost of hosting it anyway.

The same as when Wales hosted the Ryder cup recently...Roads were upgraded, no cones were to be seen on the motorway within a certain radius, not even skips were allowed to be seen nearby...

All this when some of us only want to see the ladies beach volleyball...

these games have come a long way from the original concept, and it has to be said,it does appear that each country is out to better previous games, which is not to bad a thing, however it is debatable as to whether the country gains financially from it,or not,is another thing...~

As some one who thinks all sports a largely a waste of time and resources and the true spirit of the olympics died long ago, I am appalled at the cost to the country in this year of hardship for many. When we are in trouble for spending more than we have or can repay, When our country is technically (actually) bankrupt we are putting on a huge vastly expensive show to hide the truth that we can't afford it. Talk about ignore the gorilla in the room. I will be doing my best to avoid the whole thing. With the possible exception of the event that Mr Cox has mentioned. lol

It's just our luck (GB) that no sooner had the announcement been made on the winning bid then the Lehmann Brothers s**t hit the fan and the downturn began in earnest.

I don't mind there being an Olympics in this country but do mind about it costing the tax payer over ten billion pounds. How much of that money will we get back in profits from the Olympics? I reckon at the most only a few hundred million. So they will make a loss of something like 9 billion 500 million pounds. What a waste of money!

In my neck of the woods (Essex) we are going to have the mountain biking and I think diving. I expect that there will be traffic chaos while that is on & there is allready talk of blocking the roads with a truck or two if they inconvenience the local workers too much.
I am considering putting a tent on my motorbike and clearing off to Holland for the duration!

Regards
John
