Lol, I know it's above Watford Gap, and I think that anywhere that says 'glass' with an 'a' like apple rather than gla'r'ss is oop north, but even I struggle to categorise Leics as up North! lol.

LOL, at Sillytizer,
still, spose it is North from Devon.
And it sounds better than going to The Midlands

Watch out for Robin Hood in the Notts area.

Depends what you consider 'up north', lol. I am in Co. Durham. We have a few regional universities - Sunderland, Newcastle, Northumbria, Teesside, and of course, Durham. I've attended Sunderland, Newcastle and Teesside so I can comment on those, but I think the local tourist info will give some great ideas for places to stay, eat, etc.

Opps .. looking at the messages rather than the titles. Thanks coxy!

Leicester and Nottingham are 'darn sarf' for those of us in the North West.

Up north for me is anything north of Stoke on Trent.

stoke on trent i believe to be the midlands,so heading south of here leads to watford gap, however a run up to manchester would have one on a northerly heading,so i think birmingham leicester could be considered the midlands,...~

Leicester is great for shopping, if that's your thing!

Not been to Nottingham for a long time, though I don't think Lincoln is too far. They have the cathedral and castle - again, if you're interested in that.

I seem to remember that historically The North started at Crewe. It's something to do with it being one of the main junctions between the railways of the Victorian era :o)

what sort of things do you like to do?

you have the national space centre in leics [next door is a pumping station meuseum, i found that interesting and it was free when i went...they had some great showering/bathing inventions in the 19th century].

belvoir castle in the vale of belvoir is within easy reach.

come to melton on a tuesday for the cattle market/street market [its not just cattle that is bought and sold] and call into dickinson and morris "ye old pork pie shoppe",the home of the pork pie.

lots more to do...

walking, Things that are cheap to do would be great...

" She said Leicester and Nottingham..."

My best advise would be to keep going...That said Matlock Bath is a weird place (in a nice way) bit like a seaside promenade, only miles from any sea!

I had fish'n'chips there once on a romantic weekend, aye it were reet grand...

Leicester and nottingham are in the east midlands not up north.the north starts at cheshire and yorkshire though some people seem to think derbyshire is up north when its not.
as for things to see well nottingham has the castle and a good shopping centre as for leicester not really many things to see there touristy wise.

Just you be careful in that 'oop North place, them's a wild and wooly lot 'oop there. Mind you things have improved over the last year or two, they've got this new fangled electric now and I hear tell they'm getting telling-bones soon as well.
