I'm a mathematician by training and an IT person by choice. I fix computers for a living, and play about with them for fun. I learn everything I can about everything; there's never enough time, but I can try.

I'm bad at sports but I try to stay healthy. Mostly I fence (poorly, but enthusiastically). I love evenings in with friends. I can shop forever.

Some things I love: Board game nights with friends. Reading (anything and everything). Talking about random topics until a silly time of night. Art. Classic rock. Theatre/movie trips.

Some things I do sometimes: Walks in the countryside. Holidays. Bowling.

Some things I would never like: Clubbing. Rugby matches. Luminous cocktails. Swimming.

I want to meet new people and find a long-term relationship. At the risk of cliché, I'm hoping to find that special someone with whom I can spend my life.

My hobbies and interests

Cooking	My diet is extremely restricted, so I'm a terrible cook. (I used to decorate cakes very well, but I'm badly out of practice right now.)
Shopping	Love it. I can browse forever, in shops or online, trying to find the perfect (whatever I'm shopping for).
DIY	Good with a flatpack or paintbrush, so-so with a hammer. Amazingly good at computers, networking and gadgets. I want to learn to do more, but like advanced car maintenance, I never find the time.
Housework	Housework is a chore like any other; no better and no worse. I like the house neat because I'm very organised and like to know where everything is, but I'm not fanatic about cleaning as long as it's in reasonable shape. I hate gardening.
Dining out	My diet's very restricted. I love to go out for dinner with friends, but I don't actually eat anything while we're there.
Movies	Love to. I'll go see most things, though left to my own devices I go to the movies for random blockbusters and watch the less special-effects driven stuff on the small screen. I hate going to the movies by myself; it's a social activity for me.
Theatre	Enjoy theatre trips, though I don't go as often as I used to. Rarely miss a musical if I can help it.
Music	Wide range of musical taste; I'll try most things once. Classic rock at heart, but my tastes go from classical to 50s comedy to cheesy pop. I don't like most electronica, club music and R&B, but there are odd exceptions.
Gigs	Not a regular, but I like to make the concert if any of my favourite bands are in reach. Favourite gig ever: Brian May touring with Kerry Ellis last year. They were awesome. (The last Iron Maiden concert was a close runner-up.)
Pubs	I don't drink, so I only go to pubs socially if friends are going.
Clubbing	Never liked clubbing, even in my Uni days. I'm not against the idea; I just can't stand places where you can't talk to the people you're with.
Newspapers and magazines	Random selection - whatever catches my eye that week.
Books	I read rapidly, non-stop, and always have. Currently on the bedside: Books by Mike Shepherd, Mike Carey, Janet Evanovich. All-time faves: Anything by Neil Gaiman, Jim Butcher, Brandon Sanderson, Iain Banks. Extra authors all the time.
TV	Used to watch a lot randomly, now I just stream on-demand my favourite series. I watch a lot of TV, but I can't stand to just watch TV by myself; I have to have it on while I'm doing something else, or watch it with someone.
Watching sport	Not bothered. (I understand why people play sports, but I've never seen why people watch someone else having fun with them.)
Playing sport	Fencing, historical. It's the only form of exercise I truly love. I'm thinking of taking up another martial art, but mostly to improve my fencing.
Hobbies	Game design - all kinds. (Board games, card games, computer games, roleplaying - it's all equally interesting to me. I play, redesign and run all of the above.)

My hopes and dreams

In ten years I see myself	Married and raising our child/children. But I'm not sure about much else.
Who would I invite to a dinner party?	Hypatia of Alexandria. Brian May. Stephen Fry. And my sisters. (OK, that's technically five people, but they wouldn't soon forgive me if they missed that party.)
My ideal date	I'm not sure about my 'ideal date', because I value the company more than the surroundings. Dinner and a great show is all it takes if you're with the right person; fireworks and rocket ships can't save it if you're not.
What would I never, ever give up?	Reading. I'd be screaming and irritable inside two weeks, insane in six months. I love stories in all their forms.
If I had to give a speech on a subject I was passionate about ...	Mathematics. Language. Friendship. Great storytelling of our time. (It's getting me to shut up about subjects that I'm passionate about that's the real trick.)
If I could visit anywhere in the world at any time in history	I'd visit right here, 300 years in the future. I want to know where we're going. Renaissance Europe would be a nice second choice to visit. Say, Vienna at its height. (But you wouldn't want to live there.)
If I had a million pounds to give to charity	I'd split it - third-world infrastructure investment, and Alzheimer's research. And a little to internet free speech organisations.
