Mr_T_67 (45) from Strathclyde
I was advised to 'sell myself', as it were, on here. How does one do that without coming across as cocky and big-headed?
If we're going with appearance, I'm six feet tall, blue-eyed and blond, and looking five to ten years younger than my real age. Living in Glasgow, I'm often referred to as 'big man', but I reckon that's due to height more than build.
Some terms used to describe me.....smart, easy-going, humourous (a mainly dry and dark sense of humour, with a good sense of the ridiculous thrown in), gentle, polite, considerate, intelligent, reserved, handsome, 'nice guy', elegant (I know....it surprised me too when I heard it, but there must be an element of truth), clean, honest, and open-minded (but to a degree)...just some of my good points. On the other hand, I can be quiet and need some 'me' time now and again.
In many ways I'm just an average guy.
In fact, I'm really struggling with this. I've never done anything like this before, so I don't know what to say. I'm trying to be honest, but perhaps don't have the self-awareness or self-assurance to be able to present myself accordingly.
One thing I do feel is that I express myself better through the written word than the spoken word, so if you wish to communicate through email/message and text, then I might be your man. However, I'm kinda looking for some physical connection too, ultimately, and unless my passing you a note reading "How about it?" is an acceptable prelude to foreplay and lovemaking, then we could have some problems here. (That's an attempt at humour, just in case you thought otherwise)
The reason I signed up to this dating website is because I reckon I was conceived on a midsummer's eve, or damned close to it. Is that crazy talk?
Ideally, I'm hoping that one day I'll find someone whom I shall never wish to part from. That said, this person should have strong compatability. That's why I've put the friends/hobbies thing down too. If we can share interests and experiences, then there's a stronger chance we can build something stronger.
However, I also believe there has to be a mutual physical attraction too. So, if distinctions have to be made, I prefer a taller, slimmer woman, although petite has its charms too. As I'm lucky to look a bit younger than I am, I'd prefer someone a bit younger than me too.
There's an inner narcissist here, WLTM similar but in the female of the species.
Like I may have mentioned above, I've never done this before, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to say. I kinda like the way that an internet introduction gives a chance to dispense with some of the bullshit and just be honest from the off, but still, it feels a bit strange when you're not used to it.
As I think more on this, I'll add or remove as required.
Forgive me if it's offensive in any way.

My hobbies and interests

Cooking
It's not a case of 'can't cook, won't cook' in my house. I can do some soups, some basic pasta dishes, some easy salads and so on.
I don't do it a lot 'cos it's just me here, and quite often cooking too much food sees it go to waste, or maybe I'm too tired after getting home at 9 or 10. If I had plenty of time and space and someone to eat with, I'd get more adventurous.

Shopping
Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer going into a shop to get what I need, so supermarket runs and suchlike do not phase me. The internet is a great resource for finding what you want, or finding stuff you didn't even know you wanted, and I'll buy the odd book or CD or whatever online, but generally I'll do the footwork.
As for clothes and shoes and stuff.....I ain't the type of person to be out every weekend looking for the latest clobber. No way. Fashion and bling ain't my thing, baby, However, I don't hang out in trackies, nor does the waistband of my jeans sit just under my buttcheeks. That should be outlawed. Big label/branded stuff - nah! Keep the elegance understated. That's my view.

DIY
Och, I can do some, but I know my limits. However, it does no harm to learn some and try it.
I have some tools here to get some basics done, but there's no workshed attached to this place.
However, if it's a flatpack needing done - I rule!

Housework
C'mon. I have a Dyson AND a Dustbuster. Which end of the housework spectrum does that put me at?
I also: do my own washing and ironing; take the rubbish out; change the sheets regularly; do the recycling, wash my windaes......
I'm not a slob, okay?
Dining out
Eating out is always a wee treat, but I don't have the haute-cuisine places on speed dial. I prefer an earthier meal, but nothing too spicey either!
I'll eat fish, fowl, flesh and veg, in most combinations and from most styles. My only issue is making a decision from a menu. That's one thing I need to improve on - it takes an age when I'm involved. I need to let impulse take over.

Movies
I don't go to the cinema a lot, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy watching films. I think the cinema is for those films that I very much wish to see sooner rather than later but, if I'm not so fussed, they'll be on DVD soon enough. Sometimes I'll go see a classic/favourite at the GFT.
My taste is mixed - some indie, some world, some art-house, some Hollywood block-buster, some low-key gritty realism.
I like the work of the Coen brothers, Jim Jarmusch, Wes Anderson, Sylvain Chomet, and Powell & Pressburger to name a few.

Theatre
Not something I've done a lot of in my life, up to now, but not closed to the idea.

Music
Music? I love music. A life without it is a living death, in my view.
I'm currently putting my CDs on to the PC and rediscovering some stuff I forgot about. I'm reminded how much different stuff I like, e.g. soul, ska, modern classical, punk, jazz, folk, rock, trip-hop, western boogie, doo-wop, country, electronica, dub/reggae, funk, blues, world....is there anything else? Oh yes - disco!
It's not like I have it blasting through the flat all day every day, but I recognise it's ability to move people on an emotional level, and that's to be respected as a powerful medium.

Gigs
As much as I love listening to music, I don't dig it so much in a live environment. Maybe it's the crowds, and the volumes that put me off. However, I do appreciate the power and emotional impact that live music can carry, so this year I have tried to attend more performances. Five so far (May '11), and that's a good rate for me. Enjoyed all of them.

Pubs
Pubs and bars, eh? Maybe twice a week to have a couple of pints with a friend on a weekend evening, but not everyday and not on pub crawls.
I used to work in bars, and saw some folk spend way too much time in them, and I never understood that, nor did I want to be like that.
My drink is generally a pint of decent beer. Wine - perhaps with a meal, but I find it too easy to drink and therefore too potent. Spirits - a rum or a whisk(e)y, on occasion.

Clubbing
Nah.

Newspapers and magazines
Regular reads:
The Word magazine - music/film/books
MOJO magazine - music
Singletrack magazine - not so regular now, but mountain biking-related
If a newspaper......not so much but prefer something less tabloidy.
Books
I used to read a lot and then, for a long while, I didn't read very much at all. That seems to have changed again recently. I like reading - very much. It's just finding something to read. I prefer a book from which I can learn some new information on a particular topic, such as ....oh, I don't know...language, culture, organisations, behaviour, natural history. I quite like crime books too, but with humour. Authors like Christopher Brookmyre, Carl Hiassen. I've read and enjoyed some Bill Bryson, some Norman Mailer. Three favourite books were Perfume, The Time Traveller's Wife, and The Life of Pi. The rest are there to be discovered.
TV
I don't watch a lot, and when I do watch it tends to be from about 9pm onwards. There's a lot of rubbish on, mind you. However, I enjoy natural history programmes, some American animation, some sitcoms, some US drama, some comedy news/quiz shows, some music shows, some films and so on. I also find ad breaks to be very annoying. Maybe they are the reason I don't watch so much TV!
Watching sport
Not really. The odd Celtic game if I can, but it generally means a visit to the pub, so not so often. If available on regular TV, then yes, but I won't be glued to the screen. Same for big competitions like the world cup and so on, but more as a neutral spectator of spectacle.
Playing sport
Other than keeping fit? Hmm. Not much. I'm not against playing sport though. If I'm asked, and the opportunity is there (along with all the kit and the enthusiasm), I'll consider it.
Hobbies
Hmmm - what to put here?
Okay, I like to play backgammon. I like to throw a Frisbee around. These two are not suited to the solitary person though, so it'd be great to find another who enjoys these.
Making compilation CDs is a wee bit of an enjoyable and frustrating pastime too. Is that typically a 'guy' thing? Perhaps I should've been a late-night radio DJ, had my life taken a different path, but maybe in the next life.
On rare occasions, I like to do some shooting, whether that be clay pigeons or targets. This may not be to everyone's approval, but it's part of me and it's not illegal and it's not an obsession. I don't have shotguns lying around the house.
Travelling is something that I used to enjoy doing too, when I was younger, although I may not have been as adventurous as some. Maybe in the future I'd like to see some new places.
One thing I noticed missing from here was an option about 'Art'. Now I'm no afficianado, nor am I a creator, but I'm told I have a creative streak - I just don't know what it is. In terms of what I like, well that's difficult too. I know it when I see it. The Calvin and Hobbes coloured frames and imagination scenes are fantastic. American popular art from the 40s/50s/and 60s is also great, especially the Pin-Up genre, but then, I'm a sucker for the female form.
