I'm an open and friendly sort of person, empathetic and a good mediator. On the left politically I'm interested in environmental and development issues. I enjoy reading and listening to music but also like to be active (walking and cycling). Having studied chemistry at university I still have an interest in science and technology, however I also enjoy history and art.
I was born in Manchester, grew up in Durham and Wiltshire and have spent most of the last 25 years living and working in London. As I like travelling I particularly enjoyed a couple of stints in Stockholm and San Jose. Working in Manchester wasn't quite so exiting though.
I haven't been married and have no children. I'm currently working for a small software house in the city.

I'm looking for companionship and good conversation so someone who shares at least some of my interests would be ideal. Party animals and sports fans probably not ideal but otherwise I get on pretty well with most people.

My hobbies and interests

Cooking	I enjoy cooking when I've got the time. Favourites are Indian and Chinese, although having just come back from holiday in Greece I've recently being trying some Greek dishes.
Shopping	For me shopping is a necessity not a pleasure, apart from shopping for books and music.
DIY	If something's worth doing it's worth paying someone else to do it properly.
Housework	I try to keep the house clean and tidy. I can manage clean, but tidy happens every few weeks when things get a bit out of hand.
Dining out	I enjoy eating out, mostly Indian or Chinese but I'll give anything a try. I recently came across Hakka cuisine - Indian Chinese food, very good.
Movies	I occasionally go to the pictures to watch block busters like Avatar, but mostly watch DVDs. A random selection of favourite films (mostly old) would be anything directed by Powell and Pressburger (A matter of life and death, Colonel Blimp etc), On the Town, 2001, North by Northwest. More recent films - Toy Story 3, District 9, The Social Network. Oh, and I'm a member of the BFI.
Theatre	Once or twice a year. I’d like to go more often but I need someone to go with. Volunteers?
Music	My musical taste is eclectic – something interesting to be found in most genres including jazz, blues, funk, electronic, country (old stuff at least), Cuban, some classical. According to my iPod I’ve recently been listening to The Happy Mondays, The Doors, Ray Charles, Celia Cruz and The Stranglers.
Gigs	I’m an infrequent gig goer.
Pubs	I prefer pubs to bars – you often can’t get a decent pint in a bar, and the music is too loud.
Clubbing	Never really fancied clubbing.
Newspapers and magazines	i usually read the Guardian online, sometimes Private Eye. I generally read Scientific American and sometimes the National Geographic.
Books	I probably have too many books, a mixture of fiction and non-fiction. Fictional tastes tend to detective fiction (eg Boris Akunin), historical (such as Patrick O'Brian) and some sci-fi (eg Iain M. Banks).
TV	I mostly watch BBC 4 documentaries - history, music or nature and tend to watch other stuff on DVDs. A random selection of favourites: Seinfeld, Father Ted, Twin Peaks, Little Dorrit, The Darling Buds of May, QI.
Watching sport	I don’t watch any sport – just doesn’t interest me.
Playing sport	I don't play any sports
Hobbies	I periodically try to learn the piano and also admit to an interest in astronomy (I have a telescope).

My hopes and dreams

In ten years I see myself	I’d like to think I’ll still be healthy and fit, living with my ideal partner and enjoying an active social life. Working less than 5 days a week would be good, there’s never enough days in the week to do everything.
Who would I invite to a dinner party?	There are a lot of options here but (this week at least) I'd invite Danny Baker, Oliver Postgate and Roger Bacon for dinner. Assuming we can get over the language difficulties with Bacon (and ignoring the fact that he and Oliver Postgate are dead) I'd say we should have a pretty interesting evening. Mind you I'm not sure what I'd serve - maybe not curry?
My ideal date	hmmm...needs a bit of thought...
What would I never, ever give up?	I was tempted to say "breathing" but maybe that's a bit obvious so maybe I'd say reading books – you can explore the world, in fact the universe, without ever leaving your armchair.
If I had to give a speech on a subject I was passionate about ...	It would probably depend on where I was giving the speech and who to but I'd maybe talk about global warming - something that is not only interesting but also very important. Hopefully the audience isn't composed of oil executives. Mind you though...
If I could visit anywhere in the world at any time in history	I feel pretty lucky to live in Britain in the present – most of the world most of the time has been a lot less secure and comfortable. Still, the weather can be a bit grim so I’d probably opt for somewhere in the San Francisco Bay area, still in the present (would you really want to live without electricity or modern plumbing?).
If I had a million pounds to give to charity	I'd donate to a charity that not only helped save lives now but actively campaigned to prevent the poverty, war, exploitation that causes people to need help in the first place.
