Peru & Machu Picchu September 2009

We walked the Inca Trial into Machu Picchu and down to Agua Calientes before catching the train back to Cusco.

Day 1: K88 Urubamba Valley. Start of the trek.

Day 2: On the way up to Huaylabamba, Wilson (my guide) and I acquired 3 friends.

Day 3: Looking back on the way up to Dead Woman's Pass (the first pass).

Day 3: You can see now how Dead Woman Pass gets its name.

Day 3: Dead Woman Pass at 4,200 m. After an 8 hour ascent, I felt like a dead woman too.

Day 4: View from the top of the 2nd pass.

Day 4: Inca ruins between the 2nd and 3rd passes.

Day 4: The 3rd pass at 3,600 m, with the Rio Urubamba far below.

Day 5: View from the third pass. Agua Calientes and the Rio Urubamba below, Machu Picchu just tucked out of sight.

Day 5: Lunch stop at Winyawayna. One of the nicest of the Inca ruins.

Day 5: Triumph at last as I enter Intipunku or the Sun Gate with Wilson.

Day 5: From Intipunku, the first view of the citadel of Machu Picchu.

Day 5: Classic view of Macchu Picchu.

Day 5: Machu Picchu at last.
